And so we say goodbye to autumn and hello to winter — this means that it’s time, too, for the renowned Rockefeller Center in New York City to open its doors and welcome the skaters.
Not really.
On Saturday, the 22-acre center officially started its run for the season, so to speak, but there were still revelers at Coney Island. That meant that not everyone was really busy dusting off their ice skates and testing the huge space in Manhattan. No one can blame them, that’s for sure — the temperature was more like autumn still and had none of the makings of winter.
“I have a swimsuit in my bag just in case,” joked ice rink guard Manny Bedigan, 28.
“Obviously the weather is unbelievably warm, but it makes sense for New York. New York does its own thing and so does the weather - and why not the skaters?”
Why not the skaters indeed - as people from virtually all walks of life still managed to hobble their way to the famous rink — photos of which, by the way, can be found HERE. Some even expressed their joy that they did not need to bring their huge sweaters and wear their heavy (and, more often than not, unflattering) winter clothes.
“I never miss the first day. As long as the ice is frozen, I’ll be here,” said 35 year old Kate Hollanda, 35. “It’s actually nice to be skating without all the paraphernalia. It’s hard to skate with a big sweatshirt,” she added. “It’s nice to be on the ice because there’s a cold breeze coming off, it’s a nice way to stay cool out on a hot day.”
Stubborn New Yorkers who instead opted to go to the beach thought otherwise. “It’s warm, it feels like summer, the water’s really nice,” said 10-year old Victoria Vortman, who ran in and out of the Coney Island surf
“It feels like summer - I don’t want to go to school.” Yup she said too much.
Nonetheless, we’re sure you guys can’t wait to go and show off your top form on the ice. There may not be any ramps for you to showcase your always-perfect half-pipe but hey, you do need to be one with the amateurs sometimes ![]()
